U.S. Representative Becca Balint, who represents Vermont’s at-large district in Congress, posted a series of statements on April 17, 2026, addressing recent legislative developments and political issues.
In her first post on April 17, Balint commented on the debate over the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), stating: “It was a looong night – but we were able to show some real strength by preventing a clean FISA reauthorization that fails to protect Americans’ privacy. They were only able to get a very short extension that runs until the end of April. We still have a chance to get this right.” This statement was made as lawmakers considered extending FISA provisions amid ongoing concerns about privacy protections for Americans.
Later that day, Balint addressed the departure of an individual named Lyons from his position, writing: “Good riddance. Lyons may be leaving his job, but he needs to be held accountable for his disgraceful conduct in this role.” The context behind this comment refers to criticism surrounding Lyons’ performance and actions while in office.
In her third post on April 17, Balint turned attention to economic inequality and announced an upcoming event: “Billionaires and large corporations are raking in record profits while working families struggle with rising costs. On Tuesday, I’m bringing together colleagues and advocates to discuss how we can ensure the ultra-wealthy finally pay their fair share. Join us:”
Balint has served as Vermont’s at-large congressional representative since 2023 after succeeding Peter Welch. She previously held office in the Vermont Senate from 2017 to 2021 and resides in Brattleboro. Born in Heidelberg, West Germany in 1968, she is also an alumna of Smith College, where she earned her BA in 2001.
