Rep. Becca Balint, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Vermont’s at-large district since 2023, posted a series of tweets on January 8, 2026, addressing both the aftermath of a fatal ICE shooting and legislative developments regarding healthcare.
In her first post at 19:25 UTC, Balint commented on explanations from the Trump administration regarding an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), writing: “The Trump Admin’s explanations don’t survive contact with reality. We all saw what happened: ICE gunned down an American citizen, and we want answers. Now.”
Later that evening at 22:26 UTC, Balint criticized the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) response to the shooting of Renee Nicole Good. She stated: “What Americans needed from DHS: a factual statement of remorse regarding the shooting of Renee Nicole Good. What we got: twisted lies, homophobia, and Kristi Noem in an oversized cowboy hat. Shame.”
In her final tweet of the day at 23:02 UTC, Balint shifted focus to healthcare policy updates in Congress, noting progress on tax subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She wrote: “Great news, the House just passed a three-year extension of the ACA tax subsidies. Next steps: call your Senators, keep the pressure on, and let’s get this to the President’s desk.”
Balint has represented Vermont’s at-large congressional district since replacing Peter Welch in 2023 and previously served in the Vermont Senate from 2017 to 2021. Born in Heidelberg in 1968 and currently residing in Brattleboro, she is an alumna of Smith College.
