U.S. Representative Becca Balint, who serves Vermont’s at-large district, addressed several issues in a series of posts on April 14, 2026. Her comments ranged from commemorating Yom HaShoah to criticizing recent actions by the Trump administration and expressing concern over economic challenges.
On April 14, Balint marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, stating, “This evening, I’m joining Jews across the world in observing Yom HaShoah. As a global community, we mourn the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust. Not only were they all human beings with hopes, fears, dreams, and desires, but each of them had a story. My” (April 14, 2026).
Later that day, she addressed an incident involving Mohsen Mahdawi: “One year ago, ICE illegally detained Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident in Vermont, for exercising his 1st Amendment rights. Now, the Trump administration has FIRED the immigration judge who ruled there was no basis to deport him. It’s clear retaliation.” (April 14, 2026).
In her final post of the day, Balint criticized former President Donald Trump and discussed rising living costs: “Donald Trump has never had to live paycheck to paycheck. It doesn’t make a difference to him if gas prices stay high for the rest of the year. We need to end this war and lower prices NOW.” (April 14, 2026).
Balint has served in Congress since 2023 after replacing Peter Welch as Vermont’s at-large representative. She previously held office in the Vermont Senate from 2017 to 2021 and resides in Brattleboro. Born in Heidelberg, West Germany in 1968 and a graduate of Smith College (BA), Balint is among Vermont’s prominent political figures.
