University Of Vermont And State Agricultural College issued the following announcement.

Burlington--Students from four Vermont schools have qualified for the 2022 FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Houston, Texas, April 20-23.

Fourteen teams from throughout the state participated in the Vermont FIRST Tech Challenge Championship in March, with the top two teams earning a trip to the world championship, which can be watched live at www.firstchampionship.org/watch. Two individuals also were selected as finalists for the FIRST Tech Challenge Dean's List, a national leadership award, at the state event at Champlain Valley Union (CVU) High School in Hinesburg.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global program for young people, ages 5-18, with four age-based levels. Participants learn how to design, build and program robots to solve a challenge or complete a task using STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The CVU Robo-Hawks, CVU High School, placed first in the state tournament. Team members are Lindsay Beer, Wolfie Davis, Violet Fennern, Jack Gourlay, Jared Kennedy, Crawford Phillips, Charlotte Tyler and Sam Yager. Their coach is Olaf Verdonk, a tech education and math teacher at the high school.

Batteries Not Included from South Burlington High School (SBHS) came in second. Leo Brown, Jackson Goodman, Siddahnt Nazre, Sriram Sethuraman, Ken Smith, Elliot Stadtmauer, Myra Waqar and Yuyang Zhang make up the team roster. They are coached by Ryan Estes, a SBHS computer science/robotics technology teacher.

Dean's List award finalists are nominated by coaches and mentors for their outstanding leadership abilities, teamwork, individual technical expertise and accomplishments in robotics. Any team member in 10th or 11th grade in North America (includes Canada and Mexico) is eligible. Ten winners will be chosen and recognized at the world championship.

Vermont finalist Henry Kasulka of East Montpelier is a member of Bubbert Innovations, a robotics team at U-32 Middle and High School in Montpelier. Isaac Vernon, Sunderland, is a student at Burr and Burton Academy and president of the Manchester Machine Makers 4-H Club and FIRST Tech Challenge Team.

At the international event, the Vermont delegation will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from engineering and technology firms, college STEM programs and other exhibitors and engage with interactive exhibits at the Innovation Faire. They also may take part in a dance party, movies in the park, outdoor games and other fun activities to meet students from other countries and U.S. states.

In Vermont, the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences oversees the program with support from UVM Extension 4-H. Teams are formed through schools, after-school programs, 4-H clubs, scout troops and other youth groups. Coaches and mentors work with the teams and help connect them with engineers and maker spaces for expert advice.
