As folks across Vermont turn to creative solutions to address the state's housing crisis, many are running into roadblocks due to local zoning regulations and objections from residents. A recent VTDigger report detailed the case of one proposed development in Cornwall, VT. The initial proposal incorporated single and multi-family homes, commercial space, and shared green space and was inspired by walkable villages but did not make it past Cornwall's Development Review Board. These kinds of denser, mixed-use developments encourage thriving local communities but are often not allowed under current permitting regulations. Developers did eventually receive permits for 10 residential units and are still hopeful that their dream of a denser, walkable neighborhood can be achieved in the future.
