No-cause termination of tenancies (often referred to as "no-cause eviction," a term tenant advocates say is misleading for the people who experience them) have become increasingly common as rising property values lead landlords to choose not to renew leases for tenants in hopes of raising rents. Moss, a veteran and one of the many recently houseless folks in this position, shares with VTDigger how his benefits - of $1950 - cannot cover the new normal of $2,000/month apartments, much less his other expenses like food, utilities, and transportation. People in Moss' position face higher rates of discrimination as landlords find higher-income tenants to rent to, and often hold biases against people living with financial subsidies. Moss shares to reporters fear for his three animals who he has shared his life with- his dog and two cats- as he shifts into a shelter living situation. Moss has lived in St. Albans most of his life, but ultimately is not afforded the privilege of stable housing.
