Rep. Becca Balint, currently serving as the congressional representative for Vermont's at-large district, issued a series of comments recently on social media, touching upon issues she believes are crucial. Balint's tweets, dated April 21 and April 22, 2025, address perceived excesses in the application of technology in governance, immigration processes affecting long-term residents with green cards, and a sharp critique directed at media figure Pete Hegseth.
On April 21, Balint questioned certain economic models, particularly their intersection with national security. She posed a query suggesting skepticism towards the concept of militarization being subject to commercial practices. "What stage of oligarchic capitalism is a subscription service for the government to use military technology…?"
Continuing her reflections on societal developments the same day, Balint criticized the treatment of long-term immigrants, highlighting the case of an individual who has resided in the U.S. for a decade. She characterized the denial of due process to this individual as indicative of a troubling trend. "If you’ll deny due process to someone who’s been here with a green card for 10 years, who talked about peace and building bridges, then we are down a sick path."
On April 22, Balint expressed her opinion about Fox News host Pete Hegseth, calling for his dismissal. Her statement was decisive, suggesting it's imperative for national safety. "It is now completely undeniable that America will be safer if Pete Hegseth is fired. He’s got to go. Keep the pressure."
Balint, who succeeded Peter Welch in 2023 as Vermont's representative, has been part of the U.S. Congress since then, following her political service in the Vermont Senate from 2017 to 2021. Born in Heidelberg, West Germany in 1968, and a graduate of Smith College, she resides in Brattleboro.
