Thank you, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge for this timely and important statement about Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH)!

The Fair Housing Act requires HUD - and those who receive HUD funding, such as local governments, states, housing authorities, etc. - to "take proactive and meaningful action to overcome patterns of segregation, to promote fair housing choice, eliminate disparities in housing-related opportunities and foster inclusive communities that are free from discrimination." But for most of the Fair Housing Act's history, HUD has failed to fully enforce this requirement. HUD is now releasing proposed AFFH changes to make the rule stronger and ensure that local governments and other recipients of HUD funding not only confront and reject housing discrimination in all forms but recognize and remedy enduring inequality.
